Closest I could get was this shot at 80cm on macro. Interesting result is it is very clear that you can shoot a closer view from a further distance away using the Sigma 70-300mm zoom lens, than with the kit lens. In plain English this means you can get better closeups from further away and have less chance of disturbing insects or other wildlife in the process. Naturally the camera's built in image stabiliser plays quite an important role here. I was shooting these photos facing downwards so the image stabiliser was probably not kicking in.
On my Canon Powershot S2 IS the equivalent shot would have been 1-2cm away from the object.
