HMS Belfast - Captain's Bridge

It was from here that the Captain or Officer of the Watch passed engine and steering orders to the helmsman at the wheel in the forward steering position, located six decks below. Communication was originally by simple voice pipes and a few examples of this can still be seen.

In between the chairs reserbed for the Captain and Navigating Officer is the 'Pelorus', the main gyro compass repeater with 'Lubber's Line' to indicate the ship's head and course. Log, Gyro, Rudder and Engine Room Repeaters showed the status of all the ship's systems.

HMS Belfast was originally designed with the Compass Platform loacted on the open bridge immediately above this position. In the late 1950's the upper part of the bridge was completely rebuilt to accommodate the rapid development of more sophisticated electronic equipment and the "Pelorus' and its associated ship-handling instruments were moved inside to their present location.
