Gwibber is integrated into Ubuntu now so chat as well as broadcasting (to Twitter, Facebook, Identi.ca, etc status lines) are integrated into the top panel. As status messages come in from friends they are displayed as pop-ups in the top right corner. You can adjust preferences in the Gwibber app.
